Earn Your High School Equivalency Certificate

​​City Colleges of Chicago offers free classes to help you earn your high school equivalency certificate, go to college, and build a career. Students seeking high school equivalency (HSE) may be eligible for scholarships covering more than half the cost of either the GED® or  HiSET® exams.

Online HiSet Testing                                

You can take the HiSET exam at home by completing the following two steps:                                

Step 1 - Registering at HiSET® Exam at Home​. On the Choose Test Center Location page, select Remote Home Testing and click continue.                                

Step 2  -  You will receive an email from ProctorU®. The email is usually delivered within a few hours. Complete your registration in your ProctorU® account by selecting your test date and time. Use the link and temporary password in the email from ProctorU® to access your ProctorU® account. Select Schedule next to your test. Choose a date and time for your test and click Select, then Schedule. When you’re done, you will receive a confirmation message on screen, and by email. Click on the link below to register to take the HiSET exam.

You can receive discounts on the HiSET exams by calling the Education Testing Services customer support hotline at 1-855-MyHiSET (1-855-694-4738) to schedule a test at a testing center (paper or computer based) or an online test from home. ETS will apply the discount and complete the purchase over the phone.      

  • HiSET Computer: Reduced from $93.75 to $13.75
  • HiSET Paper: Reduced from $115 to $35.00
  • HiSET Online (from home): Reduced from $141.25 to $61.25      ​

Online GED testing                                                  

You can log into your account to see if you are eligible to take the GED test from home. Log in to your account to check if you are eligible. You are eligible to take the GED test online if you fall into the following categories:                                                   

  • Your in-person test appointment was cancelled                       
  • You’ve passed 3 of 4 test subjects
  • You’ve scored “Green” on the GED Ready practice test within the past 60 days​

While the supply lasts, Illinois GED test takers can receive $20 off all GED Official tests. Students enter promo code ILSAVE20 when paying for the test.                                 Constitution Test

All Fall 2020 Adult Education (English as a Second Language and High School Equivalency prep) courses will be offered as distance-learning.  That means that students do not come to campus, but will use free online tools like Brightspace, Zoom, emails, and calls. Class structures vary but will generally look like one of the following:                                              
  • ​You will meet at a specific time each week. 
  • You will not meet a specific time. Rather, you will be able to work independently/at your own pace using the tools listed above.
  • A combination of the above two options. 
How to Apply                                                                   
  • New students to Adult Education should apply to get started with the Adult Ed online application.
  • If you need help with your application, head to our Virtual Student Services​. You can click on your college to contact its Adult Education department directly or find general assistance via the live chat.​     
After you apply online you will receive an email with a brief assessment test to complete for placement purposes.                                                                    

Chromebook or Wi-Fi Hotspot Loaner Program                                                            
You can also use your CCC student information, which you will receive after you apply, to fill out the loaner laptop and/or Wi-Fi hotspot form.                                                               

Who is Eligible

Students must:                                                                               

  • Be 18 years or older
    • Or ​16/17 years old with a high school separation form
  • Live in Illinois
